Applying Technology and Automation in Human Resource Management

In recent years, technology and automation have revolutionized the way we work, and the field of Human Resource Management (HRM) is no exception. The application of technology and automation in HRM has the potential to streamline processes, reduce costs, and improve efficiency. This essay will discuss how technology and automation can be applied in HRM, based on academic research.

The first way in which technology and automation can be applied in HRM is through the use of Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS). According to Kavanagh, Thite, and Johnson (2017), an HRIS is a software system that provides a comprehensive view of HR-related data, such as employee records, performance evaluations, and benefits information. HRIS systems can automate many administrative tasks, such as payroll and benefits administration, allowing HR professionals to focus on strategic initiatives that add value to the organization.

The second way in which technology and automation can be applied in HRM is through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). According to Parry and Tyson (2018), AI and ML can be used to automate routine tasks, such as resume screening and candidate matching, reducing the time and effort required for recruitment. AI and ML can also be used to identify patterns and trends in HR data, such as employee turnover, allowing HR professionals to take proactive steps to improve retention.

The third way in which technology and automation can be applied in HRM is through the use of Electronic Performance Management Systems (EPMS). According to Schraeder, Becton, and Portis (2017), EPMS systems provide a structured approach to performance management, including goal setting, performance monitoring, and feedback. EPMS systems can be used to automate many aspects of performance management, such as data collection and analysis, reducing the administrative burden on HR professionals.

Finally, technology and automation can be applied in HRM through the use of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR). According to Ahmed and Boudreau (2019), VR/AR can be used to simulate real-world scenarios, such as job interviews and training sessions, providing a more immersive and engaging experience for employees. VR/AR can also be used to provide virtual tours of the workplace, improving the recruitment and onboarding experience.

Conclusion

Technology and automation have the potential to transform HRM, improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing the employee experience. HRIS, AI and ML, EPMS, and VR/AR are just a few of the many technologies that can be applied in HRM. To maximize the benefits of technology and automation, HR professionals must be willing to embrace change, develop new skills, and adopt a strategic approach to technology adoption.
